At Carpentry Australia, we love shining a light on tradespeople who not only excel on the tools but also manage to balance business, family, and everything in between. Recently, we caught up with Matt and Cam from Limitless Build. These are two blokes we know well, long time supporters of the industry, regular contributors to Helping Hand Days, and genuinely deserving of the recognition they have earned as champions of their trade.
From Apprentices to Business Partners
Matt and Cam have been in business together for more than a decade. They are brothers in law as well, which adds a unique layer of trust and commitment to their story. Both finished their apprenticeships in the late 2000s, and what started as a casual chat over a few drinks eventually grew into a thriving carpentry company built on shared values and clear communication.
“You never know until you try,” Matt says about working with family. Their advice for anyone considering it is to be honest, communicate clearly, and make sure you are aligned on the bigger vision.
Balancing Work, Business and Family
Running a successful carpentry business while raising a family is no easy task, but Matt and Cam make it work through structure and communication. A shared calendar and predictable routines help keep things running smoothly. Clients know when they are available and families know when they will be home.
“It all comes down to scheduling and being dependable,” they explain. Switching off mentally at the end of the day is something they value too. Being present at home, even for small windows of time, makes a big difference.
Building a Strong Team Culture
Limitless Build now has a team of six on site and four in the office, and fostering a positive team culture is central to their success. Regular reviews, toolbox talks and open conversations give everyone the chance to contribute, from apprentices through to senior staff.
“Some of the best ideas come from the apprentices,” Cam says. Fresh eyes often spot opportunities that experienced tradies might overlook.
Quoting, Planning and Job Management
When it comes to quoting, Matt and Cam encourage tradies to think beyond the obvious. Materials handling, site access and labour requirements can easily be underestimated. These hidden costs can make or break a job.
“You have got to know your numbers,” Matt explains. “If you are charging fifty dollars an hour, you are probably only keeping half of that after tax, super and overheads.”
They use systems like Fergus to keep communication, scheduling and documentation tight. Their motto is “Poor preparation promotes piss poor performance.” Planning well and documenting everything leads to consistent execution.
Trust Is Everything
For Matt and Cam, nothing beats seeing a client’s reaction at handover. That moment reminds them why they do what they do. They also challenge the stereotype that tradespeople just want to overcharge.
“Trust is everything,” they say. Deliver quality work and be transparent and the referrals follow.
Advice for Apprentices
Their guidance for apprentices and young tradespeople is simple.
Be punctual. It sets the tone for your career.
Pay attention. Safety and learning depend on it.
Invest in good tools. They make the work easier and safer.
Be open to learning. The early years lay the foundation for everything that follows.
Looking Ahead
Limitless Build is currently working toward their Domestic Builder Unlimited licence, which will allow them to take on bigger projects with greater backing and insurance. It is an exciting next step as they continue to grow responsibly and sustainably.
The Takeaway
Matt and Cam’s journey shows that success in the trades is shaped by more than skill on the tools. Communication, preparation, team culture, trust and personal balance all matter. They have built a business that performs at a high level and reflects strong values both on and off the job site
