Helping Hand Day: Giving Back to a Gold Coast Local Who Gives So Much

At Carpentry Australia, Helping Hand Day is about more than building. It’s about using our skills to make a real difference in people’s lives. It’s about recognising the quiet heroes in our communities, the ones who give tirelessly to others, and creating something meaningful as a way to say thank you.

Every project is an opportunity to create something lasting, strengthen connections, and say a heartfelt thank you to those who quietly show up for others day after day.

In 2024, Helping Hand Day brought us to the Gold Coast to honour Matt Scott, a dedicated ICU nurse whose compassion and tireless work touch countless lives. Matt spends his days caring for people in their most vulnerable moments, a demanding, high-pressure job that often goes unseen, yet the difference he makes is profound.

To show our gratitude, Carpentry Australia, together with our partners, transformed Matt’s home into a safer, more functional, and welcoming space for him and his family.

The project included major carpentry and landscaping upgrades: new stairs, improved access points, and refreshed outdoor areas turned previously unsafe, cluttered spaces into areas of comfort and security. These improvements don’t just make daily life easier, they create a lasting reminder of the community’s appreciation and care.

What truly makes Helping Hand Day special is the incredible people behind it. Tradespeople from across Queensland volunteered their time, expertise, and energy, braving challenging weather conditions to deliver something extraordinary. While the physical changes to Matt’s home were remarkable, the impact went far beyond timber and stone, it was about connection, support, and a shared sense of purpose.

Helping Hand Day is a celebration of community. It reminds us what it means to show up for one another, to offer our skills, our hearts, and our time, in service of someone who has spent years serving others.

We are proud to honour people like Matt Scott, and even prouder to be part of a trade community that embodies generosity, compassion, and unwavering commitment to making a difference.
