Building Futures in the Hunter: Novaskill Singleton Celebrates Construction Pathways Graduation with Strong Industry Support

A new generation of aspiring tradespeople has taken a major step toward their careers, with Novaskill Singleton proudly celebrating the graduation of its latest Certificate II in Construction Pathways cohort. The program — made possible through the generous support of the Singleton Community Economic Development Fund (CEDF), a partnership between Singleton Council, Glencore and The Bloomfield Group — continues to demonstrate the powerful impact that locally delivered, industry-backed training can have on regional communities.

Held at Singleton’s Pirtek Park, the graduation event brought together graduates, families, industry partners, local leaders, and employers to acknowledge the achievements of eight participants who successfully completed the nationally accredited qualification.

Hands-On Training That Leads to Real Jobs

Funded through the CEDF, the program enabled Novaskill to deliver high-quality, practical construction training right in the heart of Singleton. Students gained foundational carpentry and construction skills through hands-on workshops, on-site projects, and structured learning guided by experienced trainers.

That practical experience is already paying off. Five participants have already secured apprenticeships or employment, and Novaskill is continuing to connect the remaining graduates with local employers hungry for new talent.

This outcome reinforces an important message: when industry, education providers, and local government work together, real pathways are created — and people’s lives change.

Building Skills While Giving Back

One of the standout features of the course was its direct contribution to the Singleton community.

Under trainer supervision, students constructed picnic tables and a new ticket booth, now permanently installed at Pirtek Park for the Singleton Greyhounds. These are not only practical additions to local facilities but also lasting reminders of what community-driven training can achieve.

Every cut, nail, and measurement represented the students’ progress — and the industry’s future workforce learning the importance of quality workmanship and community pride.

Industry and Community Leaders Show Strong Support

The significance of the program was highlighted by the attendance of key community and industry leaders, including:

  • Dan Repacholi MP
  • Mayor Sue Moore
  • Deputy Mayor Cr Sue George (CEDF Chair)
  • Justin Fitzpatrick-Barr, General Manager, Singleton Council
  • Local employers and community partners

Their presence speaks volumes about the value of investing in skills development and supporting the next generation of tradespeople.

Novaskill CEO Shae Prescott acknowledged this in her address, emphasising the importance of local collaboration.

“This program has provided real pathways into employment for local people. By bringing construction training to Singleton, we’ve been able to build both skills and community capacity,” Ms Prescott said.
“We’re incredibly proud of our graduates, our staff, and the partnerships that made this possible.”

Industry Partnerships Making a Difference

This program was strengthened by the support of many local businesses who contributed materials, tools, guidance, and encouragement. Novaskill extends thanks to:

  • Singleton Council
  • Bunnings Singleton
  • DeWalt
  • Carpentry Australia
  • Reece Plumbing
  • Eaton’s Mitre 10 Singleton
  • Spring Hill Meats
  • Clear Light Photography

For Carpentry Australia, this is exactly the type of initiative that aligns with the organisation’s mission: supporting the development of skilled tradespeople, promoting excellence within the carpentry industry, and building strong, community-focused career pathways.

Strengthening the Future Workforce

With increasing demand for skilled carpenters and construction trades across NSW and the Hunter region, programs like this are not just beneficial — they are essential.

Novaskill continues to deliver training that:

  • Responds to industry needs
  • Provides clear pathways into apprenticeships
  • Supports regional economic development
  • Connects job seekers with real employment outcomes

By working closely with councils, employers, and community groups, they continue to ensure that local people have access to the skills they need to succeed in local industries.

A Bright Future for Singleton’s Emerging Tradespeople

As the graduates move into apprenticeships and entry-level roles, they carry with them not only practical carpentry skills but also confidence, teamwork experience, and a sense of achievement. Their success sends a strong message to others in the community who may be thinking about a career in construction.

The partnership between Novaskill, the CEDF, industry supporters, and employers demonstrates what is possible when everyone works together to invest in people, skills, and community outcomes.

For Carpentry Australia, this is another shining example of the value of industry-aligned training — and the importance of celebrating the success stories that inspire the next generation of carpenters.
